There is an old saying about not judging a book by its cover and never was a case clearer than our recent stay at the Town and Country in San Diego. With many hotels booked due to special events in the area; we found this locale online after many of our usual options were not in play for this trip. After a busy morning and afternoon covering SeaWorld, we made our way to the hotel eager to rest after a busy few days and to get relaxed prior to our cruise the following morning. Our arrival was chaotic to say the least as the locale is undergoing extensive renovation which caused much of it to be enclosed and limited us to drive in and wait in a crowded area. There was a convention going on as well as an event concluding so my check in time was long as I waited upwards of 20 minutes to get served. On top of that, parking was a nightmare as all the lot spaces were overflowing and even the parking garage was full. Considering there are multiple buildings in the compound, it was a trick navigating the tight rows and when you went into an area and found no parking it made it frustrating. After many minutes of this, I was ready to call it good and cancel our stay and take our chances finding another locale last minute. Thankfully a couple people pulled out as we were able to take their spot and made our way to the room. It appeared as if one part was a hotel tower and the rest of the compound were converted apartments as they were clearly not new and the fact that the two pools had a layout that supported this. Our room was small and clean but had good Wi-Fi, coffee, and numerous channels, so despite the image of an aged exterior, it was comfy and quiet. We made our way to the local Sports Bar on site and thanks to a Steampunk convention going on; the menu was basic compared to what they usually offered. Thankfully the food and service were good and we were also informed about the grab and go options available at another location. The hotel is also near a mall which offers plenty of dining, shopping, and entertainment options for those who do not mind a walk or a short drive. Our check out was easy and the staff kindly made change for me so I had singles to use for our cruise later that day. I heard that Condos are being built on site around new hotel upgrades so I look forward to seeing what the completed project looks like. While it does not look nearly as modern and fancy as many hotels in the area, the Town and Country offered and clean and comfortable stay in a setting that is different than what you may expect.

"Good resort and conference center."

It is easy to tell this is an older resort and conference center, but the owners/management have done a good job keeping it clean and functional. I had almost no problems with the service. The conference amenities were good. it is not a fancy/upscale resort but it works. They have put some cool artwork and decor in many of the rooms to reflect the local culture, which is nice. The price was higher than what I would normally pay for a hotel, but it was necessary to be on location for the conference. The price seemed to be in line with most hotels in the area. There are only two minor issues I had with the resort. If I am on a non-active vacation (like a conference), then I like to work out. They only had a small make-shift work out facility (at thee time I was there). I was able to make do, but it could have been better. Also, tThe service at the front desk was a little slow, not egregiously slow, but enough to notice. It seems the problem was that they only had one person at the desk during a few hours of the day. Thus when, more than one or two people came for service, it easily got backed up.

"Great Service and great location"

This is my second visit for a conference. The renovations are moving along and the upgraded rooms are beautiful. The staff is amazing across the board-special shout out to Jeanne in the restaurant, she took great care of my elderly parents. The close proximity to the mall, trolley and beach is a huge plus. But if you dont feel like leaving, the grounds are well laid out and you truly feel like you are on vacation. I will be back in April and cant wait.

"I honestly don't know why any organization would have a conference here. Terrible yet again."

This was the 4th conference I've attended here over the years and each one has been horrible. Upon check-in, I was given a room on the first floor. As a solo woman business traveler, I don't do rooms on the first floor. When I asked for another room and explained why, the guy gave me a hassle and actually said, "Well, at this place, women want the first floor so they don't have to carry their bags up the stairs." Um. OK. Well, I don't mind carrying my bag. I do mind staying on the first floor. The room felt like a highway motel from 1988. Exactly how I remember my rooms from previous stays. I also had to kill several ants. The curtains were broken, so it was hard to get any privacy since people were constantly walking by the room. The alarm clock wasn't plugged in. There was no desk to work, nor was there any pen or paper or a book describing the area or where I can eat. The only things in the room were old, musty furniture. The sink didn't drain well and the faucet was filthy with a little mold. In addition, the water tasted horrible. The hair dryer also didn't work. The walls were paper thin, forcing me to listen to my neighbor's conversations. Besides breakfast, the conference food was awful (it's hard to screw up eggs). Who serves a carne asada wrap cold? They also whisked the food AND the coffee/hot water away very quickly. They least they could have done was left the coffee and hot water! I also ate dinner at the only restaurant on the property, which had only about 5 things to choose from. The burger was burned to a crisp and tasted like burnt char. I had better food at the airport. On the positive, the bed was comfy. The shower was OK, even though the water pressure wasn't great. The towels were nice and thick, but too small (when wrapped around me, it barely covered my butt). I honestly don't know why any organization would host an event there. From now on, I will skip any conferences at Town and Country.

Under construction for renovation of the property and sure it will look great. Our room was completed and nicely furnished in the two room suite we stayed in. However not all the property rooms are not yet done. I would make sure you stay in rooms that are completed. Convention areas were very good for all the meetings we attended. We’ve done these conferences in many areas around the country and the staff is AMAZING. The AV and all the staff for setup is amazing. Reception food was the best. Can’t say enough good about the conference staff. They were quick to help when issues arose. When construction is done I’d love to see it.
