"Not a Great Experience"

We made our reservation through Hot Wire and was not very happy with our room. We were put in one of the oldest buildings at the end of the hotel. We went 3 days without internet service (included). The room was clean although the layout of the closet was odd. It is on the side of the bathroom sink so only 1/2 of the closet is really accessible. The grounds were full of flowers and the transit system and shopping center are only a short walk away.

This was not a happy trip for us. Our daughter who lives in Clairemont and who's hospital was in La Jolla (amazing UCSD facility, BTW) lost our first grandchild at 18 weeks into her pregnancy. So we booked last second via an app. We arrived at the Hotel around 9:30 and were greeted warmly after a very short wait at the desk by Omar. My husband told him he's read that the tower was newly remodeled and Omar immediately upgraded us to a tower room. He was pleasant, accommodating and told us what we needed to do if we had to extend out stay, which we did the next morning. Spoke to a beautiful Russian woman (she spoke Russian to another of the hotel guests) whose name escapes me. Also, very accommodating , professional and just nice. It was wonderful to have such amazing staff around us at such a difficult (unbeknownst to them) time. The room was modern without feeling cold. There was a wallpaper mural on one wall of a surfer's scene. The bar area included a separate sink and mini fridge and the ice machine was right off the elevator. The bathroom was well-appointed. They have robes available for your use. The room was good sized and the bed was comfortable. There was a small balcony with a table and chair overlooking one of the pools and a patio area for guests. The housekeeping staff was great, friendly and helpful when we encountered them. I left something in the safe and called on our way out of town. This was the only glitch, they operator said she would let housekeeping know and they would send it to us and charge my card for the postage. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. But on the day I was going to call them to see what happened, Housekeeping called me to tell me they found it. They hadn't gotten the message, but called my on their own. I received the item the next day. Happy Ending. Parking was easy, but was an extra charge. We didn't get a chance to try any of the restaurants, nor did we get to walk around the grounds. But what we saw look well manicured and maintained. Again, at a difficult time, it was truly a comfort to stay here. I can only imagine how much better it would be if you were staying for fun. Close to all the area attractions!

Two days into our 4-day stay and it's really nice!!! I was not expecting to enjoy it so much due to the mixed reviews. Half the family is at Comic-Con and I'm here with a sick kid so have been spending all my time onsite rather than sightseeing and eating out as planned. Pools are wonderful and mostly empty since everyone is at Comic-Con. Charlie's and the Terrace restaurants have both been excellent! Super easy to walk over to the mall if you want to. Yes it's dated, so if you can't get past the 70's vibe then it's not the place for you but I think it adds to the charm. Rooms are clean and staff is very friendly.

This place is redolent of some mid level sprawling beach resort without the beach. the grounds are huge, 3 separate swimming pools, overflowing with flowers, a tiki bar, hot tub. Parking $20/night, I heard. However the super cool thing is the "trolley" really an elevated train is right out the back door and will take you anywhere. We bought a 3 day pass for $14/each & went everywhere, even to the Mexico border on it. You can literally walk into tijuana from the train stop. We upgraded to a 1 bedroom and had an odd but wonderful layout. It was really two separate cavernous rooms but one only had a bed & one a pullout couch which was the most fantastic pullout couch, better than most beds I've slept in. Each room was huge, dorm fridge but no microwave. We were in the back tower so a 3 minute walk to the lobby where they have free hot strong coffee in the morning (I hate those Keurig things). Its a 5 minute walk to the huge mall next door and there are lots of other hotels (with restaurants) in this "Hotel Circle" which I guess is the city trying to concentrate hotels in this one kind of central but isolated area. Good free wifi
