"San Diego 2018 American Academy of Dermatology Conference Stay"
TripAdvisor user rating 5 out of 5
Reviewed February 19, 2018 NEW
A boutique hotel that operates with the comfort and dependability of well-known facilities three times its size, the Kimpton Solamar was able to accommodate the entirety of my company attendees as this was the American Academy of Dermatology designated hotel for us. I could not be more thrilled that the AAD put us there, as there was no aspect of the six-day visit that was not ideal. From the rooftop pool and bar to JSix attached, to the on-site conference rooms and the guest accommodations themselves, I enjoy the friendly, helpful staff and had reason to interact with them every day. For ease of walking to all the in-demand sights and attractions to the impressive, elegant touches in the lobby and rooms, this Kimpton property is a true find in the Gaslamp District in San Diego!

Lovely hotel, great modern room. Bathroom was awesome. Plenty of restaurants and places to visit. Disappointment only with city itself in this area. So many homeless people. Did not bother us, but hard to appreciate the beauty of the city and our recent cruise with so many homeless.

"Lovely hotel with character"

We stayed at this hotel for 2 days on our way to Baja California. We found the staff to be very helpful and the hotel is a bit different to your usual big city hotel. Its very smart but has a bit of a colonial type feel to it. The rooms are large and comfortable and the hotel is in a great location for Gaslamp. Highly recommended.

"Lack of communication regarding nightly incidental fees"
TripAdvisor user rating 2 out of 5
Reviewed February 14, 2018 NEW
I booked our room 2 months prior to arrival. My husband and I were celebrating our birthdays. Upon booking, I was not made aware of the $100 nightly incidental fees. When I checked in I was shocked! That totaled $400 additional that would be debited from my checking account on top of the almost $1000 I would be pay for our 4 night stay. I budgeted specifically based on the information I was given when I booked our room. We’ve stayed at hotels ranging from 4 - 5 stars and never have I heard of $100 per night for incidentals. Normally it is between $50-$150 total for all nights. Needless to say, my husband and I moved to a different hotel. It was disappointing because everything we made plans to do was in the Gaslamp District or close to the Kimpton. If I would have known about the ridiculous fees up front I would have booked another hotel. I will not stay with Kimpton again.

"Check-in and Check-out needs work"

This was the third time I stayed at this hotel but the first time I experienced problems with it. When I checked in, my reservation was fine while my friend's was not. My friend received a call that both our rooms were ready but they were not. Then we were told we would both get dining and parking credit. However, when we checked out, my friend received the credits and I did not. When I pointed it out to the staff, he asked his manager (who had given us the credits when we checked in) but I was denied the credits. Ultimately, this hotel needs to get its act together.
